I get being a new artist is hard. We've all been there. And its real tempting to take from a more established artists than yourself in order to elevate your own art. Really, I get it. But when you get caught, confess. It'll go easier on you. Acting righteous and claiming that you were really ripping off "other" work that is not your own, and even claiming that you've never seen the original art is not the best way to handle the situation. All this can be seen here...Vincenzo-Raimondi.deviantart.c…

This poor Italian artist just woke up to a shit storm of epic proportions. Do I feel bad for him? Nah, he'll get over it. Hopefully, he'll learn a powerful lesson. And that is; if you're gonna be inspired, give credit where credit is due. And if you don't, and then get caught, be contrite. It'll lesson the pain.

And you might ask yourself, "hey Dave, why do you give a shit about this?" Well, in some ways I don't. It doesn't hurt me or my career in the slightest. I'm just putting it out there. To let you be the judge.

Here is just some of the offenses.

and this...

  • Listening to: Nothing
  • Reading: Nothing
  • Watching: Nothing
  • Playing: Nothing
  • Eating: Nothing
  • Drinking: A lot

hmm. I have stumbled upon this, so you must be the guy to whom fate has decided I ask this question. what about using characters and concepts? what are the standard (or legal) protocols with that? like, if someone was to make money with their "fan art" does that constitute theft? I would like to do some paintings of my favorite superheroes, and would very much like to sell prints and such at comic conventions. I fear that my concepts of (intellectual?) property might be sub-par. Do you have tips for what to do or what to avoid out of courtesy, and what to avoid for legal purposes?

I loved your work with 100 Bullets. I recently found a slightly more tactful theft of your work for the new volume of witchblade. Volume 3 of Rebirth takes your 55th issue with the Voodoo Dizzy and blends it with your 85th issue and your use of negative space and Megan's clothing.

That is possibly the single most blatant display of art stealing I have ever seen, how could someone even begin to try to think about denying it? People never cease.

As a hobby drawer I like to print and draw a lot of your stuff in my sketch book just because I think it's amazing and your compositions are incredible, but I've never, and would never shown someone my sketch book and claimed I came up with any of it.

I think thieves like this guy hurt us "lower-level" guys actually, they get gigs that they don't deserve that could go to actual artists. Like Dave said, it doesn't affect his career in the slightest, but I'm glad that you took the time out to point it out regardless. Also, to those who defend it as "fan-art", the guy is making $ off of it, and in some cases its been published. That is hack-fuckery where I come from.

Its always sad when an artist has so little faith in themselves they're willing to throw their entire career away for a really bad shortcut.

I think as a student you have to start somewhere and I take a lot of inspiration from different artists when I draw, most end up looking just like their drawings, but i do make sure to let people know where the inspiration came from, someday i will develop a style and maybe it will be 1/2 as cool as everyone i have emulated, but in the meantime I will practice like crazy but i have to agree, people should at least give credit where credit is due, I remember when Marvel forced artists to draw in "House Style" and they got smart when they let them be themselves, that is one thing, but basically ripping off a drawing because you have no inspiration and then claim it as your own work, now that is just plain disrespect.

PS: just read on the Megacon site you might be coming to Orlando, Can't wait to meet you and get some books signed

You know Dave - my way of looking at this is that this type of crap eventually just reveals itself over time. Your imagery is so strong and so memorable, that if I see any artist imitating your stuff (like the 100 Bullets cover), the first thing that I think of to myself is, "hey, he ripped of Dave Johnson's work." If that's what this clown wants to be know for, then good luck to him in his limited, embarrassing, future.

For the rest of us, we know the truth and will continue to worship at the altar of DevilPig. 'Nuff said.

I can never in my life understand why self proclaimed 'artists' would ever think of resulting to tracing, much less do it, I mean, it just escapes me coz I for one LOVED drawing, there's more of a sense of appreciation, not to mention a sense of accomplishment when you are finally able to master a certain drawing style, the feeling's exhilarating and it's a darn waste these tracers couldn't realize it themselves.

Of course. It's just standard practice to add "after so and so" under your signature. To not do so leads me to think the artist is trying to get away with having people think that the idea or drawing is entirely original.

I was just wondering if you felt like it needed it when it is a blatantly obvious "homage" which we all agree that he was working right from your original.

Yes, because not everybody knows my work or have heard of 100 Bullets. Also, the "artist" still claims that he had never seen my cover before doing his. That makes him deceptive.

I think is an issue of respect, and if you can't have the common decency to let people know "hey Dave johnson is so talented I used his art as inspiration, or in these cases straight swiped his cover art" it's just wrong

Oh, god. I find this kind of swiping nauseating. Just like Greg Land. I don't think he's drawn a single untraced thing since he started a pro comic book career. The main problem with Land's tracing is that it's so obvious; he barely modifies the original image, and this other artist did the same goddamned lazy thing. :iconfacepalmplz:

I´m not gonna go into what or why he did it, because everyone has already spoken about it; but what pisses me the most, is that the guy is not willing to apologize or accept the fact he´s completely ripping off yours, and God only knows which other artists work.
That moron has dug his own artistic grave.
