I get being a new artist is hard. We've all been there. And its real tempting to take from a more established artists than yourself in order to elevate your own art. Really, I get it. But when you get caught, confess. It'll go easier on you. Acting righteous and claiming that you were really ripping off "other" work that is not your own, and even claiming that you've never seen the original art is not the best way to handle the situation. All this can be seen here...[link]

This poor Italian artist just woke up to a shit storm of epic proportions. Do I feel bad for him? Nah, he'll get over it. Hopefully, he'll learn a powerful lesson. And that is; if you're gonna be inspired, give credit where credit is due. And if you don't, and then get caught, be contrite. It'll lesson the pain.

And you might ask yourself, "hey Dave, why do you give a shit about this?" Well, in some ways I don't. It doesn't hurt me or my career in the slightest. I'm just putting it out there. To let you be the judge.

Here is just some of the offenses.

That is possibly the single most blatant display of art stealing I have ever seen, how could someone even begin to try to think about denying it? People never cease.

As a hobby drawer I like to print and draw a lot of your stuff in my sketch book just because I think it's amazing and your compositions are incredible, but I've never, and would never shown someone my sketch book and claimed I came up with any of it.

I think thieves like this guy hurt us "lower-level" guys actually, they get gigs that they don't deserve that could go to actual artists. Like Dave said, it doesn't affect his career in the slightest, but I'm glad that you took the time out to point it out regardless. Also, to those who defend it as "fan-art", the guy is making $ off of it, and in some cases its been published. That is hack-fuckery where I come from.

Its always sad when an artist has so little faith in themselves they're willing to throw their entire career away for a really bad shortcut.

I think as a student you have to start somewhere and I take a lot of inspiration from different artists when I draw, most end up looking just like their drawings, but i do make sure to let people know where the inspiration came from, someday i will develop a style and maybe it will be 1/2 as cool as everyone i have emulated, but in the meantime I will practice like crazy but i have to agree, people should at least give credit where credit is due, I remember when Marvel forced artists to draw in "House Style" and they got smart when they let them be themselves, that is one thing, but basically ripping off a drawing because you have no inspiration and then claim it as your own work, now that is just plain disrespect.

PS: just read on the Megacon site you might be coming to Orlando, Can't wait to meet you and get some books signed

You know Dave - my way of looking at this is that this type of crap eventually just reveals itself over time. Your imagery is so strong and so memorable, that if I see any artist imitating your stuff (like the 100 Bullets cover), the first thing that I think of to myself is, "hey, he ripped of Dave Johnson's work." If that's what this clown wants to be know for, then good luck to him in his limited, embarrassing, future.

For the rest of us, we know the truth and will continue to worship at the altar of DevilPig. 'Nuff said.
