So the other day, Mark Chiarello from DC comics asked me if I'd rather have a 100 Bullets cover book with just covers from the series, or a Dave Johnson DC comics cover book with a huge selection of ALL the covers I've done over the 20 years I've been working for them, including a ton of 100 Bullets covers.

Thoughts?
  • Mood: Neutral
  • Listening to: Robin Trowers
  • Reading: Nothing
  • Watching: Reaper
  • Playing: with a hand gun
  • Eating: Brain matter
  • Drinking: Blue Moon

How'd I miss this question? Tough call. While I'd LOVE a dedicated 100 BULLETS collection (I'm a completist) I'd assume you'd want an all encompassing "Dave Johnson" book that showcased your best and most diversified work (as would I). :-) Too bad you can't do the Bullets book through DC and the Johnson book elsewhere. Or CAN you?????? HMMMMMMMM.

i would go with option 2, DC has put out 3 or 4 of these cover books in 10 years time - getting a second go round might be a while in coming

secondt choice gives you the option to leave out some covers that you fell not so good about, and you can put other kick ass stuff you did like unknown soldier.

All of them, no doubt about it.

Then you can have an oversight of what you've accomplished over the past 20 years.

I think you should go with the DC comics Covers selection. You are an amazing talent and although your 100 bullets cvrs are always a treat, i think the DC Comics Cover would show more of your range in terms of your layout and designwork.

Best of luck with whichever you ultimately decide on. Both should sell incredibly well. Peace and blessings...Carlos

Ever since I started reading 100 Bullets I've wanted a book of just the covers with perhaps some of your/Azzarello's thoughts on each on image kind of like the one Vertigo put out for Preacher. I would be down for a collection of all your DC covers as well, but preferably with all 100 100 Bullets covers represented.

While the 100 Bullets covers were fine work, I'm sure you've got some personal favorites that you've done for other series. I assume you've got some say as to what will be included? Go for the second option!

Besides, I've already got all the 100 Bullets covers in the collections : )

I think your hundred bullets stuff is awesome and artistically forward thinking. However, seeing as I was a fan before everything else, I would say a nice collection of all your cover work would be in order. I am sure you can hand pick the cream of the crop and make them all work with one another. Just make sure you drink as much as possible before you start choosing.

Number two, for sure.

Mark is the art director for DC? When he asks questions like that do you do little silent victory dances? Are you about to get a Cover Run style bookfrom DC?

I say option 2 because the chances of seeing all DC Johnson work in one book is slimmer (for any artist) in my opinion than a 100 Bullets cover collection.
Your 100 Bullets work commands enough attention both graphically and illustratively AND (as a body of work) stands to be published regardless, it's just a matter of when.

Go with Option 1... do something along the lines of the Preacher Cover book where you comment and have prelims on the page to the left and the published cover (sans logo and trade dress) on the right. If you go option 2 then you'll never see option one, and I think ALL of the 100 Bullet covers should be collected. Do Option 1 and you can still do an Option 2 in the future (after the 100 Bullets books sells like hotcakes).. it can include all of your non-100 Bullet stuff.

I'm surprised at that... aside from the 100 Bullet Covers you have PLENTY of other cover work that your fans would love to see collected. I for one would have bought a book of Starman covers and the Tony Harris Skulduggery book..and he didn't even do the whole run of covers for that series. Plus, you won't be doing any more 100 B covers.. do option 2 later and you'll have even more stuff to add to it. Doing Option 2 now is like writing a memoir in the prime of your career. My viewpoint may be skewed, as I'd buy a book of your cardboard sketches from years back. Just my 2 cents.

1. This might be my only chance to have DC publish ANY cover comp book. So I'd rather have all my best in there.
2. This will ONLY be my DC work. My career is a lot more far and wide than that, so there's always an option later of doing a kick-ass memoir of ALL my work down the road. Plus I'm still fairly young (knock wood) and will be churning out plenty more stuff in the years to come.

I'd still love to see all the 100 Bullets covers in one volume, but I see your point, it would be a shame not to showcase the Red Son covers, Unknown Soldier, etc. I just hope that you do commentary, similar to Brian Bolland's book. I'm always let down by art books that just present the pictures with no context from the artist.

Neither option. The 100 Bullets covers should be in one book because they deserve an exclusive, and the other covers should be in a SECOND book.

I'd pre-order BOTH!

Of course you go with a book featuring all of your fantastic covers, your Unknown Soldier covers should be hanging in museums so they certainly deserve to be in the same book with your 100 Bullets covers.

The latter, as I think it would give a better spread of what you have done, and puts the focus more on you than just your relationship with a single title.
