And here's my response to Rich (Glenn Beck) Johnson:

"Here are a couple of things. One. I didn't swipe shit. The cover in question was done months ago. Actually it was done for the DC ICON cover event. But the book was gonna ship late, so they asked me to add a background color as to not compete with that event. So I did. Second. I'm not privy to seeing ads placed in the books I do covers for. Hell, 95% of the time the script, and especially the art hasn't even been written or drawn yet. Three. It really is kind of a classic pose. And it made sense for this cover. Four. Rich Johnson, if he really wanted to, could have easily tracked me down and just asked me. Hell, if I had swiped it, I probably would have fessed up to it. But that would take effort and then he'd have nothing to write about. He's kinda like the Glenn Beck of comics Journalism. But I guess it works for him."

5 finger discount. Now, that's what i'm talkin' about Dave! :-D

P.S. great seeing you on skype video by the way--for all of twelve minutes (it's not what you think, guys).

Bleedingcool is entertaining, but not educational. He often confuses possible swipes and then doesn't apologize for calling someone a pose-thief when it was his mistake.

It's really just a lame column in general, isn't it? Feels bad to work really hard at your job only to have it marginalized like that. I'm so sick of negative comic shit on the internet anyway... I'm sure all that effort to find stuff like that could be better spent. Anyway... I barely know what I'm talking about. Hope we get a chance to catch up soon!

I think it's a pretty common pose, the right arm is totally different anyway

and who would try to swipe from some shitty cg rendering anyway, the DCU online picture is way more stiff and inarticulate

it's just coincidence that it happened to print back to back with the cover

I have a hard time understanding what the big hype is... I mean, it's a pose... big deal. You can't copyright a pose for god sakes... and if you think about, every and any pose has been used in every and any comic to date. You're going to cross paths sooner or later. If I'm missing something, sorry.

And the replies from Johnson on twitter are quite lame to the extent he's copying and pasting the same thing on damn near anyone that's had something to say to you, Dave. I mean... the one I received was Jin response JUST TO YOU was Rich saying "No, it's Swipe File. Swipe File does not accuse or judge. Homages, swipes, coincidences or vageue similarities."

Hate to tell him but he is accusing and judging. And what's funny is that last line is in damn near all posts to everyone. All I said was "accusations was the new black... no wait." I find it useless to be a dick to anyone about a fuggin' pose on two pieces that look the same. Big deal. I think we all have stuff more important to think and worry about than that.

Need to find something else to write about instead of the ability to draw a pose that looks like another pose from another comic image, that is the same pose from a movie, tv show, ad, or anything else. You're right it's a rather classic pose. No offense to anyone that likes Johnson, but this is a good example of a Douchewaffle. And I think we all have better things to do with our time than waste air or time, regarding him. Even though I spent about 4 minutes typing this lol.

It's a common pose, so I don't see much 'swiping'. And I don't see much of a comparison between Glenn Beck and this though... Maybe he's the MSNBC of comics, or the NAACP of comics... Atleast Glenn Beck can make reasonable comparisons and links. This is just outright saying something exists when it doesnt. XD

i'm sure it's been stated already in the 60 something comments already posted, but how does he know if DC didn't swipe you? or if it's a coincidence? i'm sure if you have a comic book-ish add in a COMIC BOOK! enough times it's bound to find it's way next to something similar. and if it was swiped, who gives a shit? that's like complaining about all the flying poses with one fist forward, all ripping off superman... sure but who cares!

Seems like most of the people responding on the site are in support of you. That's got to feel pretty good. At least your fans and the general comic book reading public seem to know better. It's pretty audacious to post the accusing bit without even asking you first.

"If it was swiped of course. Either way, it was a little weird...

In Swipe File we present two or more images that resemble each other to some degree. They may be homages, parodies, ironic appropriations, coincidences or works of the lightbox."

He said "if".
U mad? Don't be mad.
I think it's just for the lulz, and if it had been someone else you probably would have thought it was funny.

The fact that it's called "The swipe File" automatically disparages anyone involved in the making of the images. The disclaimer after the fact is just an ass covering method so if anyone does get offended then he has his out.

Madness.

Could that pose BE any more of a classic pose?
How many times has Spidey busted that one out....or, like, ANYONE!

The thing that amuses (and baffles me) though, is that he chooses to target YOUR work; one of the best artists in the business.
Oh, so Dave's been doing rock solid, badass work for YEARS...and then decides to blag someone else's work, is that it?
Lunacy.

What a berk.

I'm willing to bet that pose has been done at least a dozen times over. Big deal. F that guy. Too much time on his pathetic little mind and probably not an artist. Critics never put their money where their mouth is. That's why I hate them. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but when it tries to influence a public forum, I find it irritating, the lack of tact or discretion with their choice of words.

We all need to get over this "swiping" thing. I know it was in vogue for, well... ever. And when someone truly takes a shot for shot panel swipe thas one thing. But really folks. There's only so many ways the human body twists and contorts. And people have been drawing from caves to paper for what, some 15,000 years. You aren't gonna draw anything original. Just not gonna happen. It's the combination of all those unoriginal poses that makes stuff pseudo unique. And with that....your cover looks nothing like the cover in question.

And if i'm being honest I'm kinda fuckin sick of this nonsense. But as previously stated in a way. What would these idiots have to write about...when the site section is purely about "swiping".

It's a yawn...at best.

Glad you blew up their face with a reply Sir.

How can two artist out of the hundreds of thousands that draw every day ever do the same pose! There is no way thats possible! Its definitely a swipe job!!!! How many times have we seen a character in the same pose as an other. How many ways can you draw some one flying?? It bound to happen at some point! I bet him and Glen Beck are members at the same country club for dumb asses!

The cover artist is always privy to the ads in the comic. I bet you checked the letters column as well before you drew the cover.....

The Swipe Files column is the main thing that irks about Bleeding Cool. It's mostly just content for the sake of content. If it looks swiped to them, they'll feature it regardless of context and research or lack thereof.

Bleeding Cool is basically the tabloid magazine of the comics industry. As I hear it, Rich Johnston and Co. are pretty much paid by Avatar Press to just fill the site up with whatever content that's current, sometimes it might actually be noteworthy news.

Sorry to change subject, but I actually would like to compliment you on this cover a bit. It's strong, intriguing, and makes all the characters look great. If I saw this on the comics racks, I'd definitely be inclined to pick it up. In short it does everything a cover is supposed to do. I do not feel the same way whenever I see the DC Universe ad.

He states this accusation as if you had a say or know-how as to what would be printed on the inside cover... plus there are only so many poses the human body can wriggle into. There is going to be repetition.
