I gotta say that lately the Daily DA has been pretty goddamned weak. It's rare that I find something that inspires me at all. At least in the illustration side of things. Some of it looks like it belongs on the side of a 70's van or in a high school art class. Not sure who's picking this crap, but I'm guessing they like their sauce on the weak side.

And yes, I know I'll get the comments like "Well do something about it" or something like it. To be honest, I don't have the time. I'm a working man. I'm not even asking you the reader of this journal to do something about it. I just felt like bitching about it. It's my party and I'll bitch if I want to.

So it's your time to bitch if YOU want to.

I've had about all the DD anime twat I can take. I don't even look at DD anymore.
I just started doing any kind of art again after a 10 year hiatus. All I have here so far are some Muro doodles. When I first joined up, I did look at the DD to get some inspiration for my acrylic paintings, but was mostly disappointed by the dearth of amateur anime sluttage.
I have found some really great artists here too though. You just have to dig to find them.
I peeled back a few layers and found you, of which I am glad, for you have thee awesomesauce.

Fully agree. I mean, it's nice that people are getting DDs, but lately very few of them seem to deserve it. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if a 5 year-old drew a stick figure and got a DD.
Jiangxi Featured By Owner Jun 26, 2011
It could be worse.

It could be one of the poor-quality Myspace-esque pornshots of a girl's twat we see popping up on the front page all the time. :|

This crap is seriously rage-quit material. DA's gone downhill.

I agree, and now I'm "watching" you. Don't disappoint ( say this with sarcasm,as your gallery is pretty damn cool).

I help host a nightly art jam on Facebook called the Late Night Art Jam, and generally, we love our topics and we love drawing them. You can see my doodles in my gallery with the header "LNAJ". You are more than welcome to scope it out and join us if you're just looking to get your hand moving once a day.

I feel dA as a whole has been getting weaker and weaker... I used to LOVE all the stuff I saw as dailies, and even the front page! But now it's pretty... eh. But seeing the very hidden accounts of Michael Hayes([link]) and Daarken ([link]) give me hope that the awesome will return.
Doolittle123 Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2011
Thanks for posting the links! Excellent artists!

Finally someone said it how it has to be said, honestly I feel my art is mediocre, and because of that I'm not expecting any attention, that's why I think the DD's should be as they were before, even if they continue giving them to the same artists, that will push the real potential artists to improve
BoobDan Featured By Owner May 2, 2011
I totally agree. With that said, I wont be doing anything about it either.

I think one of the reasons for the weak sauce DD's, is because it wouldn't be fair if the same people won all the time. I'm talking about the professional artists and really talented people who should be getting the DD's. So to be fair to everybody they need to spread the DD's around to the crappy artists also. Damn, I'm starting to sound like a Liberal!

I totally agree with you. There are even some cases where I'm like, damn, even *my* stuff is better than that, and I'm not all that great.

whatcha gonna do dude. I think it's due to deviantart members. more and more members are not artist. they simply create and account to comment and fav. Their population is growing and starting to take over dA. I remember 4 years ago you could click random deviant and get an artist 9 times outa 10. Now a majority of it is webcam photos and emtpy accounts...but i'm just bitching too.
pauscorpi Featured By Owner Apr 27, 2011
it's sad; i used to enjoy browsing through them and found a lot of artists to watch and follow when i first joined. then, recently, i noticed they are really really bad for DD (mostly) and i also noticed it most of the GMs that featured them were different; i don;t think it's a matter of taste, i think the mostly new GMs just don't know recognise quality or the lack of

No offense to high school art class, or even 70's vans, cause some of that $h!t was cool back then. And I like seeing artist grow visually. Yet a lot of what is on DA passes more for porn than art. Overwhelmed art caches of anime, boobs and a$$ fetsishes seems prevalent. Enjoy your favorites or just seek inspiration elsewhere.

Though I respect art as a whole, the stuff picked out as a DD is normally not the strongest stuff I've seen on here. Though that's been my complaint about dA since day one: drawing original pieces gets you no attention, but you throw up some Naruto fanart and BAM!! You're fucking Elvis.

But here the thing, it was all done by hand. And she's only 17. That's CRAZY! The composition/subject is crap but damn, girl has some skills. Look at the rest of her shit. Don't get me wrong, photo tracers/photo realists are boring to me as an artist. I mean, what's the point. But the skill that it takes to do it is still crazy to me when it's done well.

You must be darely desperate looking for inspiration to take a look there. that's the nogo area. :D
TenderlySharp Featured By Owner Apr 26, 2011  Professional General Artist
You want the DD to filter quality and save you time, but the kind of person who could deliver on that isn't the kind of person who would have extra time to volunteer for the position. Deviant art is full of great work regardless. It is worth the effort to look through the favorites of your favorites.
My favorites btw are worth a look: [link]

I'll be truthful...I rarely look at them. I've been here for four years, and I can recall checking them out (intentionally) at least five times.
I basically use DA as an RSS reader for good stuff.
zeruch Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2011  Professional General Artist
As someone who used to pick them for years, one thing I find common is that theres a cyclical thing that happens -- moods where you are loading a couple weeks worth of ones at a time, in waves of edgier, then waves of more middle of the road. I always suspected everyone went through that. And then every once in a while you throw a serious WTF trippin balls number in there to see if folks were paying attention.

It also sometimes gets impacted by who is suggesting items to the gallery admins (you have to find a balance between letting the community find stuff, and letting you find stuff). No one has ever done it "perfect" and I suspect its alwasy going to ebb and flow because of that.

I've never really browsed the DD expressly for this reason. For the most part, I know to expect this kind of subject matter, and only this kind of subject matter, and to never aspire to actually get to the DD or even become particularly popular because I don't draw this stuff.

Still, though, I'm here. Not for the popular, but for the good. Make friends. Share some awesome. All you gotta do to be here. :)

Agreed. It's all the little prepubescent brats using DA as some new Manga-inspired Myspace.
JudeDeluca Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2011
Everyone needs an outlet to vent or we'd go crazy. Imagine a world where no one had the internet to let out their frustrations.

DA's either in a rut artistically or the moderators have really set their standards low, like you said.

youlootamax Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Ugh yeah, like, about a month or two ago, one of the DD people honestly picked one based solely on the fact that it was fanart of one of her characters <_< That was one of the few times I actually sent a note in to complain about it, because not only was that a really weak reason, but if she really -had- to pick something from that person's gallery, there were much better pieces in it (although, had it been me, I wouldn't have picked anything from their gallery).

What was REALLY sad, was a couple years ago one of the guys picking DDs was actually in the descriptions as to WHY he picked said pieces, saying "It's not the best, but I like *names off one thing*". If they don't think it's the best, they SHOULDN'T BE PICKING IT.

I also can't stand the amount of people tossing around the word "perfect" on the picks.

But yes... in short. I agree with you. I've even tried suggesting some myself, but they never pick them <_< They still go for the crap they end up picking.

Seriously, considering the quality of the work that gets DD's most often I wouldn't even consider it an award myself. I know I wouldn't say thank you if I ever got one.
staceyowens Featured By Owner Apr 26, 2011
I see it less as an award and more of an opportunity. Obviously someone or a number of people have found SOME point of interest about the piece given a DD, even if it's just that it is horrible and pointedly so.

If I ever got a DD (shall never happen), I'd be using the opportunity to score more viewers like crazy. It's all about the promo man.

I've also gotten extremely tired of browsing the DD section, AND the most popular section. The most popular section is constantly filled with bad photography, laden with harsh photoshop effects, fake blood, corny titles, and that emo-ish, myspace, teenage style of taking pictures in the mirror, and art that just doesn't speak to me, and it's hard to imagine that people enjoy seeing Naruto and Sasuke make out so much. The daily deviation is just the same, there is no inspiration or real creativity there in my opinion. I feel that whoever is in control on this site needs to set some kind of standard, I don't mind my freedoms on this site being cracked down on if it means I don't have to search high and low to see something amazing.

I'm tired of DA whores who post ten pictures at a time of there vaginas and call them "My Pussy 1", "My Pussy 2", and so on, and I'm tired of poorly made fanarts being on the first page. Okay, I'm done.
