Every year I make something by hand. And just about every year I lose to something topical/humorous. Hell, one year my first samurai costume lost to a guy who dressed up as Beetlejuice. 20 years after the fucking movie came out. Anyway, this year I wore my Batman Samurai outfit that I made last year, and the party I went to is having a photo contest after the fact. Wanna correct this injustice? It's Sunday July 17th and I've got my last B.P.R.D. cover to do. And it needs to go out the door tomorrow. So here's what I need translated as soon as possible.... "Let us burn the evil out" or something that gets that idea across if this doesn't translate well. My computer isn't doing the job and I want it done right. If you're reading this on the 18th then you're too late so don't waste your time. The cover will already be out the door.

I gotta say that lately the Daily DA has been pretty goddamned weak. It's rare that I find something that inspires me at all. At least in the illustration side of things. Some of it looks like it belongs on the side of a 70's van or in a high school art class. Not sure who's picking this crap, but I'm guessing they like their sauce on the weak side.

And yes, I know I'll get the comments like "Well do something about it" or something like it. To be honest, I don't have the time. I'm a working man. I'm not even asking you the reader of this journal to do something about it. I just felt like bitching about it. It's my party and I'll bitch if I want to.

So it's your time to bitch if YOU want to.

The reason I'm writing this is because someone who uses computer puppet programs like poser to do 95% of their "art" asked me if I thought DC or Marvel would ever hire a guy like him. I told him "I hope not". I went on from there and you can read it in my front page comments. Was I a bit harsh? Sure. But that whole letting the computer do everything for you isn't what I can art. It actually pisses me off. Computers are tools, not artists. It's why Pixar blows the doors off the guys who just cranked out "Mars needs Moms". And I guess I'm not alone in my opinion, because that piece of crap movie is looking like it'll be one of the biggest flops in recent times. Why? Because it lacks soul. If I want to see realistically rendered things I'll look at a photograph. If I want to see great comic book art, I prefer to see a human using his/her hand. Even if it's only on a Wacom.

Just my opinion. Take it or leave it.

"Here are a couple of things. One. I didn't swipe shit. The cover in question was done months ago. Actually it was done for the DC ICON cover event. But the book was gonna ship late, so they asked me to add a background color as to not compete with that event. So I did. Second. I'm not privy to seeing ads placed in the books I do covers for. Hell, 95% of the time the script, and especially the art hasn't even been written or drawn yet. Three. It really is kind of a classic pose. And it made sense for this cover. Four. Rich Johnson, if he really wanted to, could have easily tracked me down and just asked me. Hell, if I had swiped it, I probably would have fessed up to it. But that would take effort and then he'd have nothing to write about. He's kinda like the Glenn Beck of comics Journalism. But I guess it works for him."

Clement Sauvé is gone. The world is now a sadder place for it.

Well, for those who want to read the continuing adventures of Flatulene (the gaseous girl in the world) you can now buy the book that she'll be appearing in on a quarterly basis. The book/magazine is called "Titmouse" and it's being published by the animation studio of the same name. If you've seen the Adult Swim show Metalocalypse, then you know what this studio is all about. It's a crazy mix of art and stories with an interview with one of my favorite artists, Dave Cooper.

So the other day, Mark Chiarello from DC comics asked me if I'd rather have a 100 Bullets cover book with just covers from the series, or a Dave Johnson DC comics cover book with a huge selection of ALL the covers I've done over the 20 years I've been working for them, including a ton of 100 Bullets covers.
