They decided against me finishing the background and just go with the three figures.

The finished cover would have been amazing. Looks fantastic now! I liked what you did with the three panels on the back for the finished product anyway, but this is still great.

Haha... I think I remember that book D20 Modern PHB? I didn't realize that was your art. Sometimes it's funny, the things I remember after years of working at the comic shop.

At one point, when I was a LOT less wise, I considered going broke buying all these RPG books I was never going to use because of the cool Dave Johnson covers.

I thought that was intentional. I think it looks cool fading from open line to color!

The color fading was intentional. I was too lazy to color the whole thing. I just wanted to give the client a 'vibe' of what I was thinking.

Funny how this looks like what Immonen's doing these days.

Nice look. Colored pencils?

Been meaning to ask...did you have a mentor early on in your career that helped shape a lot of your thinking in terms of illustration and design and trying new things?

Well, I joined Gaijin Studios when I first started out. I was there about 2 and a half years. So I guess you could say I picked up a few tricks of the trade there.
