Azzarello portrait by Devilpig Azzarello portrait by Devilpig
Did this for Steve Gettis and his site... [link]

He's a crazy Canuck who won't stop until he gets what he wants. His ultimate plan is make everybody fat with his sweet confections as they look at his amazing art website.

The portrait is of my buddy Brian Azzarello the write of 100 Bullets.

Please tell your friend respectfully to never touch Gotham City again.

Ever.

... Good likeness though.

Why? Was it somehow worse than anything else Batman related in the past 10 years? Say what you want, but at least Azzarello has a unique voice that is far from boring. Did he somehow ruin Batman? I think not. If you don't like his writing...... don't buy it. It's not like anybody follows any continuity anymore anyway. So what ever you feel he did wrong will be forgotten when the next writer comes along and does what ever he/she feels like doing with the brand.

It just wasn't Arkham: Riddler wasn't compulsive, Joker wasn't funny, Croc wasn't bestial. They were gangbangers from 100 Bullets 2.0 instead of insane freaks. When Bermejo and Azzarello were allowed to do a mature Batman book I expected something way, WAY over-the-top. A psychic soul scream underneath this gritty crime setting that sort of reeled you that Joker can be so ironically cruel and so horrifically sad. I felt Azzarello rested on his laurels when he should have been aggressively trying to reconstruct his style to have something less provocative and more thought provoking. When someone puts out a book called "Joker" I expect Aronofsky's Clockwork Orange. Something that questions what evil even means in a relative world.

It's true, people have moved on. The Batman game is great and I think more identify with those versions of the characters... I had my hopes up though that the bad guys would get a serious existential character study. Oh well.
